I am happy to work from existing photographs when creating an oil portrait, particularly because it commemorates an important event and preserves it for years to come.  Artsically, it poses interesting challenges.  The artist needs to avoid merely copying whatever he/she sees in the photograph in order to successfully create an original work of art.  I make important decisions based upon edge and color work which enhances what was captured by the original photograph.

Additionally, I make it a point not to do any tracing/gridding when working from photographs.  I think doing so takes away from the human touch provided by the artist.  Photographs capture a moment (good or bad – we've all seen the not-so-flattering half-blink picture of ourselves) and what you see is what you get.  When freehanding the drawing for a painting, in its entirety, the artist can add and remove features of the work which contribute individuality and strength to the overal composition of the painting.

I prefer to paint from life whenever possible, but instances like this one make the case for inspired photo-referencing (particulaly due the historical context – it is the preservation of a past event).  Oil portraits were historically created while the suject sat forthe artist.  These sittings could require many hours, if not days, for completion.  Portraitist continue (and often prefer) to work in this manner, but limits on availiblity of the subject to sit can make the use of photo refrerence useful.  Provided the artist doesn't rely too heavily on reference, he/she may make a great artistic statement.

When preparing an oil portrait, I prefer to paint my subjects from life during a study sitting (usually lasting between 1-2 hours) in concert with a photo shoot – this is done to incorporate the advantages of color/subject studies (from direct observation) while incorporating some of the conveniences of modern photography (saving the client time).
