Process & Fees

Those desiring to honor a loved one, a leader, or even capture a moment in time, make an excellent choice in selecting oil portraiture.   Despite the modernization of still photography and prevalence of digital media, oil portraits completed by skilled artists convey a level of beauty and emotion that cannot otherwise be captured.   Priceless and ageless, oil portraits alone withstand the test of time, allowing properly cared for works of art to be passed from generation to generation, without losing the color or beauty that is “translated” by the artist.  Oils have been used for centuries, possessing unique characteristics that make it a historically rich and beautiful medium.

Oil paints are known for long dry times, which result in a workable medium that can be mainipulited by the artist for longer periods of time.  This characteristic allows an opportunity to achieve an artisitc level of care and meticulousness that is unparalleled.

The process for commissioning a portrait begins with an in-person or phone meeting to discuss project details.  A date will be scheduled for a formal painting and photography sitting where details, such as clothing, background, and pose are studied and discussed.  The artist will perform a study painting of the subject from life (lasting between 2-3 hours) followed by a short photography sesstion.  These elements give the artist enough information to create a portrait that contains the correct color and pose.  A firm price will be agreed upon at the initial meeting, with the photo shoot included in the price of the portrait.

The in-studio work begins after the sitting.  Pete will submit an initial full-size sketch for approval prior to starting the actual painting.  Clients are encouraged to be involved in the creative process, communicating frequently.  Pete sends emails with pictures of the work-in-progress upon request.  Generally, portrait paintings require 2 – 3 months for completion (depending on the level of detail and scheduling).

Fees vary depending on the size and pose selected for the painting (head/shoulder, ½ figure, ¾ figure, of full figure) and are based upon a single subject.

Pete offers monochromatic portraits at a reduced rate upon request.

Travel and framing expenses are additional.   I require a 50% (non-refundable) deposit paid at the sitting.  The remaining 50% is due upon completion and approval of the finalized portrait.

My ultimate goal is of course to exceed the expectations of every client.  I love what I do and take great pride in the work I produce.  All portraits are guaranteed.
